2012 Jeff Harrison Editor NEWS"You and all your differences are the medicine the world needs." Stuart Milk said these powerfully inspiring words when he took the stage at the 2013 INSPIRE Awards, on Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Hart House, University of Toronto. They were said to him by his late uncle, the heroic Harvey Milk. Stuart also shared that his uncle, an out and proud public official in San Francisco when it was still radical to be so, knew he was going to die. It takes a special kind of courage to stand up for your beliefs when you know they will likely cost you your life.

Think about that for a moment. Standing up, being seen, forging ahead to break new ground, knowing full well there are people out there waiting to put a bullet in your head. That's intense. That's why it's so vitally important that we have a community that we can buoy ourselves with, find comfort in the face of fear—ours and that of others. With community we are never fighting alone.

I felt a fierce moment of pride when Stuart said things like the INSPIRE Awards are exactly what's needed, not only for our own well-being locally, but to stand as a flame of hope to those still fighting not being hurt, not being abused, or in danger of being killed for just being themselves.

No matter if you are a bullied teenager feeling alone, an activist dodging stones being thrown at you, or the only one carrying the rainbow flag before a crowd of haters screaming at you... you and all your differences are the medicine we need.

Bask in the heartfelt warmth of that statement as we conclude the 2013 INSPIRE Awards.

Peace and Love and Happy Pride!
